Now Reading: Books to Kickstart Your Career

As you probably know by now, I'm an English major and there is nothing I like to do more than read. So what better way to work toward jumpstarting my career than through gaining info from one of my favorite hobbies?

What books have I read that might be of help in becoming the PR girl/guy or editor you've been itching to be your entire life? Check out my top 3 picks.

1. Intern Queen, Lauren Berger. This book. Author, businesswoman, and former superstar intern (she had 15 internships in college, guys! 15) Lauren Berger is incredible. Her book is part how-to guide, part advice from someone who has been there, and part motivator. The result, some serious genius. After rejections from some big companies I applied to for internships, it was this book that renewed my hope and taught me to start locally and work my way up to my dream internship. I credit most of my success to God and prayers, some to myself, and the rest to Lauren Berger.

2. The Teen Vogue Handbook, Teen Vogue Editors. I think I told you guys how Teen Vogue changed my life here. This book gives anyone who wants to break into or who merely admires the fashion industry a glimpse into the fabulous, work-filled, not always glamorous world. It also does something that would make my PR prof so proud: outlines the editors' voracious appetite for news. PR tip: consume news as if your body depends on it as much as it depends on oxygen.

3. If You Have To Cry, Go Outside, Kelly Cutrone. Kelly Cutrone is a major player in the world of PR, whether you love her (like me) or hate her (like a lot of people, apparently). In a book that gives insight into her life and also her career, Cutrone injects humor, emotion, and most importantly tips on how to be successful in the industry.

Each of these books has given me a different outlook on the industries I'm hoping to become a part of. If you have an interest in fashion or are trying to find the perfect internship, I think these books are great resources.

Happy reading!

XOX,

Elise
