Oh, The Places You'll Go

Never limit your options. If you're a college student, looking for internships and work experience, undoubtedly someone has told you this. Multiple people have told you this.

And they're right.

I want to go into sports public relations, specifically hockey-related PR, but I'm still keeping my options open.

Not only am I keeping my options open in terms of internships, but I'm keeping my options open regarding how I'm going to get those internships.

Of course, the traditional routes still help: making industry contacts and applying for every internship you hear about. But in today's job market, those tactics, alone, won't get you what you want or where you want.

Please reference the Brotip in the upper right-hand corner.

The communication industry is constantly changing. You need to adapt in order to survive--yes, Darwin was onto something.

Twitter, LinkedIn, blogs and personal websites are modern-media tools every up-and-coming professional needs to use. These social and networking websites are the best way to get your name to potential employers and a great way to build your portfolio.

Carrying around business cards with your media links is much more convenient than carrying around a folder filled hard-copy résumés and cover letters.

These outlets also create one-stop shops for employers. What employer doesn't appreciate convenience?

You can't use the same tired tactics and expect different results. Be a chameleon; adapt to your resources.

Until next time...

Rock out, kiddies!
